I spent four years on the restoration of a 1970 Mustang. Part of that restoration included having Dale's build a rear end for my car.
After the car was finally done and I was able to drive it I started noticing a high pitched squeal coming from the back of the car. This noise grew louder and more pronounced by the day. Finally, with less than 700 miles on the car I took it into a repair shop in my home state of Colorado to have the rear end inspected. A very reputable transmission and rear end shop in Fort Collins looked at the rear end and determined that they would have to rebuild the entire rear end due to an improper installation.
I was informed that the crush seal had not been properly torqued during installation. I called Dale's to ask about a warranty. I was told that they would stand behind their work. They initially indicated that they would like to see the problem, but as the car was about 600 miles away that wasn't going to be possible.
Devon Long had told me that he would be happy to cover any parts that may be needed if they were defective. I told him at that time that I already had my local shop working on rebuilding it and that they already had the parts. Devon wanted to talk to the shop that was doing the work, but the local shop did not want to get in the middle of a dispute. Over the course of several weeks I spoke to Devon several times, each time asking what he wanted to do since the replacement of actual parts was not necessary.
Trying to be reasonable, I asked if he would cover the cost of the parts. I even offered to either send pictures of the old parts or to send the old parts to him. Devon indicated that he would be willing to do that but he wanted to see the parts first. I sent the parts, at my expense (approximately $70) but never heard anything from Devon or anyone at Dale's despite getting the UPS confirmation that Dale's received that parts.
About a month later I again called Dale's and spoke to Devon. This time Devon was quite defiant, stating that there is nothing wrong with any of the parts and he knows that there was nothing wrong with the installation. Devon went on to say that because no one from my local shop would talk to him there is nothing he can do. Said he would have had to talk to someone who knew what was going on but because he couldn't he now claims that I was not in need of any repairs despite the noise that I was hearing from the rear end.
That noise, coincidentally, has vanished since I had the rear end rebuilt locally. Devon suggested that I am mad at him because my local shop did an unnecessary repair to which I replied that I disagree that the repair was unnecessary and that I was upset because he has changed his position and is refusing to stand behind his work. I explained yet again that the only reason I had to have the rear end rebuilt was because of the noise it was making within a few hundred miles of leaving his shop.
In my opinion, Dale's A1 Transmission not only does shoddy work but they offer a warranty that does not actually exist. Run, don't walk away from this company!
